Although Botswana lies thousands of miles from the ocean, life in this land-locked country is shaped by water, as you will discover on this active journey through some of Southern Africa’s most remarkable landscapes. Forever shapeshifting beneath the sun, the Okavango is Africa’s mercurial wonder, a flooded paradise where rivulets run like cheetahs, oxbow lakes lie still and serene, and islets come and go with the tides. Unlike most deltas, the waters of the Okavango never reach the sea, as if guarded jealously by the land. And what treasures it hoards: from prowling lions and vast herds of wildebeest to hundreds of species of birds, wading and watching from the water’s edge. Explore its patchwork of reserves, crawling with iconic African species, before flying southeast to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. In this vast basin, once a mighty lake, thousands of zebras migrate between December and March to feast on surrounding nutrient-rich grassland – a wildlife spectacle to rival those of the Serengeti.

Experience the stark beauty of the Makgadikgadi salt pans, an ancient expanse of baobabs, curious species and cracked earth

Learn how the San people, one of Southern Africa’s oldest surviving cultures, hunt, gather and preserve their traditions

Glide over the Selinda Reserve in a small aircraft, the savannahs unfurling to the horizon in every direction

Glide through rushes and waterlilies on a serene safari in a mokoro, a traditional dug-out canoe, paddled by your experienced guide during the Delta's flood season

Orvieto, Italy

Gothic glory in the Umbrian hills
2 Day

The twisting stone lanes and charming squares of Orvieto are some of the loveliest and most romantic in Umbria, held aloft by the cypress-studded hills like a sacred altarpiece: fitting, perhaps, given the town’s crowning glory is its gothic cathedral, a lavishly carved, frescoed and mosaicked masterpiece that easily ranks among Italy’s most spectacular churches.

Your A&K Experiences: Immerse yourself in the region’s ancient winemaking traditions as you explore a local winery, complete with historic Etruscan-era caves. Learn more about the industry’s humble origins as well as the contemporary techniques used today, before enjoying a light lunch paired with expertly selected Umbrian wines.

Perugia, Italy

Discovering tradition in an Italian classic
2 Day

A place so poetic it’s mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy, Perugia is a tiny town in Umbria’s center famous for its travertine marble, Etruscan arches and medieval city walls. Despite its ancient architecture, it’s a lively student town with a jam-packed calendar of music, wine and food festivals. Home to one of Italy’s most famous chocolates, Baci (“kisses”) make sweet souvenirs for loved ones back home. Pause on the cathedral steps to eavesdrop on local gossip whilst watching the world go by on the majestic Piazza IV Novembre, or catch sunset at Porta Sole viewpoint.

Your A&K Experiences: Visit a historic glass studio, where generations of craftspeople have been making stained-glass windows since 1860, including a stunning reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. Afterwards, visit one of the last surviving hand-weaving workshops in Italy, home to original working looms from the 18th and 19th centuries.
